Tips on 'Malware' Prevention

What is Malware

Malware is a broad term covering computer viruses, Trojans, spyware, and adware. These are all programs that may get installed on your computer without your knowledge.

What does it do?

Computer viruses can range from simple annoyances like rebooting your computer, to serious issues like deleting your data. Trojans are programs that you install on your computer to do one thing (screensavers, internet games, etc.) but actually open your computer to intrusions. Spyware and adware are programs that get installed on your computer when you are connected to the internet and are designed to obtain your personal information and track where you visit on the web. This information is then used to send you junk mail, pop-ups, and other advertisements – or more seriously, to steal your identity. Also, these types of programs take up room and processing power, making your computer run slower and slower.

What can you do to protect your computer?

• First and foremost is to obtain all of the security updates and patches from Microsoft.>
